Gratitude this Thanksgiving

As Thanksgiving 2020 arrives, it leads me to feel, all at once, sadness, compassion, and hope for others and for our world. It has been a year like no other, in so many ways. So many of us have experienced loss, myself included, and sadness over the pandemic and all the terrible impacts it has had on our lives. At the same time, it has elicited compassion for our fellow human beings, appreciation for our well being and that of our planet, and recognition of the fragility of our lives. Thankfully, the year is ending with real hope for better things to come in 2021.

I am thankful for many things. Most of all, for my wife Karen, and my children, Gabriella, Casey, and Raquel, whom I love and cherish more than I can express. For my health, and for being able to tend to the little things that allow me to feel good, in body, spirit and mind. For my family and precious friends, all across the world, who support and delight all the time, and whom I try to help and likewise support at every opportunity. And I am thankful for the hope for our world with new Covid vaccines and treatments as we enter 2021, to save lives and to allow our lives to return to normal – hopefully better than the normal we experienced before.

I am deeply thankful for and grateful to my fellow citizens in the United States, who rose and rallied in the midst of a pandemic to post the highest voting turnout in US history to elect the president and administration the country so desperately needs now more than ever, and to shore up the nation’s safety and restore its place in the world. And in doing so, to repudiate the meanness and the behaviours and actions that do not comport with my notion of what America is. The country will soon have a president who is decent, compassionate, caring, thoughtful, and humble. He is deeply respectful of the office that he will hold, and acutely aware of the responsibilities he will have.

And with that, friends, Happy Thanksgiving 2020 to all, with a wish that everyone can give thanks for the many blessings in our lives, big and small.
