Everything that Matters
It’s wonderful to see your face
Even when it is pained
It’s wonderful to hear your voice
Even when it is strained
It’s wonderful to see you walk
Even when each step is hard
It’s wonderful to see you better
Even when the road seems so far
‘Cause we hear an awful lot about global warming
And the crisis in our land
As people fight for their lives
In far away Afghanistan
But when I think of the things that really matter
Nothing ever comes quite near
When I look at your smile, darling
Everything that matters….is here
It’s hard to say “goodbye” each day
Walking home is very long
It’s hard to to find the energy
Just to sit here and write you a song
It’s hard to be alone at night
Knowing you’re nearby
It’s hard to think what might have been
Without wanting to cry
‘Cause we hear an awful lot about healthcare options
And banking troubles, too
There’s still a war in Iraq, and so much fighting in Congress
No one seems to know what to do
But when I think of the things that really matter
None of these can come quite near
When I look at your smile, darling
Everything that matters….is here
Sometimes life gives us a second chance
It’s up to us to treat it right
To find the time to just enjoy our dance
And keep what matters burning bright
‘Cause we hear an awful lot about so many problems
That never seem to go away
We can turn on the news or just read the paper
And often they just fill our day
But when I think of the things that really matter
Nothing ever comes quite near
When I look at your smile, darling
Everything that matters
Everything that matters
Is here
